How Do Promotional Products Work? Turning Everyday Items Into Advertising

One of the questions people often ask is:

How do promotional products work?

It's actually pretty simple.

You put your brand on something useful, desirable or memorable.

Someone receives it.

They use it.

Other people see it.

And your brand continues getting exposure.

But there's a little more to it than simply putting a logo on a product.

The Best Advertising Doesn't Feel Like Advertising

Think about a branded tumbler sitting on someone's desk.

They aren't thinking, "I'm looking at an advertisement right now."

They're thinking, "I need a drink."

The same thing happens with a tote bag, notebook, pen, backpack or piece of apparel.

The product has a purpose first.

Your logo gets to come along for the ride.

That's one of the reasons promotional products can be so effective. They're integrated into everyday life instead of interrupting it.

According to the 2026 ASI Ad Impressions Study, useful products are particularly likely to be kept, with 78% of U.S. consumers saying usefulness is a reason they retain promotional products.

Think About the T-Shirt

One of my favorite examples of promotional merchandise is the story of Sara Blakely and Spanx.

Before Spanx became the household name it is today, Blakely was building awareness for her new company without a huge advertising budget.

One of the simple things she did was wear a shirt with the Spanx name on it.

People would ask:

"What's Spanx?"

And suddenly she had an opportunity to tell them.

That's what makes a branded product powerful.

It can become a conversation starter.

A Promotional Product Can Keep Working

Traditional advertising generally stops when the campaign ends.

A promotional product can be different.

A branded bag might be used for months.

A jacket could be worn for years.

A tumbler might sit on someone's desk every workday.

A pen could be used dozens of times.

Every use creates another opportunity for your brand to be noticed.

The 2026 ASI research found that promotional products generate thousands of brand impressions over their lifetimes. For example, ASI estimates that a $6 tote bag can generate nearly 5,000 impressions.

That doesn't mean every promotional product will deliver the same results.

And that's an important distinction.

The Product Has to Make Sense

A promotional product works best when it fits the person receiving it.

That's why I ask questions before recommending products.

Who is receiving it?

Where will they use it?

What are you trying to accomplish?

What's your budget?

What kind of impression do you want to make?

The answers can completely change the recommendation.

A police department planning a community event may need something very different from a corporate company preparing an employee appreciation campaign.

A nonprofit has different needs than a real estate company.

A trade show giveaway has a different purpose than a VIP client gift.

There is no one-size-fits-all promotional product.

Promotional Products Work Because People Use Them

That's really the secret.

The logo isn't the magic.

The usefulness is.

When someone finds a product useful, they are more likely to keep it. When they keep it, they have more opportunities to see and use it. And when they use it in public, your brand may reach people beyond the original recipient.

That's how promotional products work.

Not through interruption.

Through repetition.

Through usefulness.

Through everyday exposure.
